PART PRINT, PART SCULPTURE, PART DRAWING...

A swirling tangle of timeline...

A new exclusive print edition of 15, available at auction this month - here or by contactng my studio.

There was a moment which made my senses tingle as I saw the final print of this artwork emerge on its gorgeous paper, thanks to the printing experts at NPE Art Residency whilst I was artist-in-residence there. It is my first digital fine art print in a long time, (an exclusive edition of 15, available here). I want to share with you the journey of this artwork...

I had been working on sketches and maps of connections, creating vast drawings of webbed, intersecting lines. The artwork pairs with a poem called 'Museum of London' by Marc Nair. With my traditional pen on paper technique I drew my ideas from the lines on our palm which some people believe map our destiny; the interconnections on a family tree or a social network which map our now and our beginnings; as well as timelines which span back into history to connect us to multiple versions of the past. What I wanted was a swirling tangle of timeline, because I believe these things are often complex, misunderstood or forgotten. We often don't know much about history even as we live our day-to-day on the surface of a city whilst sensing the past under our feet in a historic place - it's presence and enormity. I started adding in shreds of paper as well as drawn lines, building up a paper labyrinth. In the end I photographed this before digitally processing it and finally printing it on a textured paper akin to the original paper of my drawing. So in the end, the work is really part print, part sculpture, part drawing.

Vain Memory (Museum of London), is a Limited Edition Print of 15, digital fine art print, 40cm x 60cm, 2016. Currently available at auction, here.
