The elderly community in Singapore is a wonderful source of knowledge, wisdom, and tales of days gone by, yet sadly many can suffer from loneliness, isolation and depression. This artwork tries to express the overwhelming feeling of their younger lives flying by so quickly, a lifetime of memories and the fear of the unknown future. These proud, strong characters want to age gracefully and continue to be in control, but it is not always possible. Old age is a time when the body can let you down. Not all are able to stay physically fit so that even when the mind is agile, the body slows down, becoming more of a cage as it limits their potential. Many have worries about memory loss as time slips away from them - both short term forgetfulness and also the loss of long-term memories and special moments. The heart is another important organ that symbolises our vitality and lifeblood as well as the pace of life. The heart of course also has a special place for the loved ones they have lost and gained during their lives. Many elderly are supported by their family or have carers, but others are in difficult situations having no way to support themselves without continuing work into very old age - the cardboard collecting uncle or the ice cream seller. The most important thing to these individuals is achieving a sense that their life is still purposeful, feeling part of a community, and maintaining their pride and dignity.
